Katherine recorded reductions across most crime categories compared with the previous year, in statistic released on Friday.

Property crime is falling in several areas with a 65.5 per cent reduction in commercial break-ins, a 48 per cent reduction in motor vehicle related offences and a 8.2 per cent reduction in property damage.

House break-ins rose by 11.4 per cent, or 13 offences compared with the previous year, to total 127.

The number of assaults also rose by almost nine per cent to 559 for the year in Katherine.

Acting Commander Brendan Muldoon maintains responsibility for providing leadership to Northern Command, which includes the Katherine, Central and Northern Divisions.

The Katherine and Nhulunbuy crime statistics encompass all three divisions.

Acting Commander Muldoon said on September 29, a La Nina was declared which is typically associated with wetter that average conditions.

"Our focus turns to the impending wet season and we remind all Territorians to ensure they are prepared for this cyclone season and the potential for localised flooding.

"With the release of the crime statics for the September 2019 to August 2020 period, there continues to be evidence that communities across the Northern Command have experienced positive reductions in all crime categories, however an increase in the consumption of alcohol is beginning to have an effect on reported crime rates," he said.

Acting Commander Muldoon said Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors at licenced premises point of sales within the Katherine region continue have a positive effect on alcohol related incidents with domestic violence related assaults in Katherine continuing to track down on the previous 12 months data, by 1.3 per cent (5 less incidents).

However the Katherine region has seen an increase on alcohol related assaults which are up 7.2 per cent (25 incidents).

Nhulunbuy has also recorded crime reductions across a number of categories, compared with the previous 12 months.
