Police are appealing for help to locate Daymon Ness, 30 from Melbourne.
Mr Ness had been travelling alone and arrived Katherine from Darwin by hire car on Monday.
He arrived at Nitmiluk park sometime after 1pm on Tuesday.
Police believe he was alone at the time.
Police also believe Mr Ness went for a walk on one of the Nitmiluk trails and has failed to return.
A family member contacted Katherine Times and said the hire car was still where it had been parked.
Police together with Parks and Wildlife staff are currently searching the national park.
Mr Ness is described as a Caucasian male, thin build, 185-190cm tall, dark brown hair, hazel eyes and was last seen wearing a black top, green/grey pants and red shoes.
Katherine is currently experiencing extreme heat with temperatures reaching about 40 degrees and high humidity although there has been rain overnight in the park.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen Mr Ness or knows of his whereabouts to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote reference 9458035.
