Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and eyes, occurs in about half of full-term babies and 80% of pre-term babies in their first week of life.
If undetected, it can cause cerebral palsy, deafness and/or brain damage.
This phototherapy system is used to treat jaundice, with the baby wrapped in the therapy blanket and kept at the mother's bedside.
Katherine Hospital general manager, Angela Brannelly, thanked the Humpty Dumpty Foundation for this donation.
"The Bilisoft LED Phototherapy System is a wonderful addition to our maternity ward and will help Katherine hospital to continue to elevate our excellent care for babies born here in Katherine," Mrs Brannelly said.
"The baby can be held, fed, even rocked throughout the therapy session, promoting a healing environment without interrupting the benefits of care."
The Humpty Dumpty Foundation purchases life-saving medical equipment specifically requested by 425 hospitals and health services across Australia. Each piece of medical equipment requested is stringently assessed by Humpty's medical sub-committee.
To date, Humpty has raised over $70m and in 2019, Humpty purchased close to 450 pieces of medical equipment for Paediatric Wards, Neonatal Units, Maternity and Emergency Departments.
