The run of 40 plus degree days begins right away.
The bureau had expected the town's temperatures to spike early next week but the heatwave begins with a run of 40 degree days from today right through the seven-day forecast period.
According to the bureau, temperatures will rise to 41 on Saturday and Sunday and then maximums of 42 degrees are forecast for Monday through to Wednesday.
The bureau doesn't expect any early La Nina rain in the next week.
November last year was a scorcher as well for Katherine.
The official weather station at Tindal recorded 16 days of more than 40 degrees in a row last November - the previous record was 10 in a row.
Unfortunately that was followed by another dismal wet season although the weather experts say the arrival of a La Nina will change Katherine's fortunes this season.
