The rise in assaults, which police are blaming chiefly on alcohol abuse, has been seen across the Territory in crime statistics released on Friday.

Commander Janelle Tonkin said crime statistics for the October 2019 to September 2020 reveal communities across Northern Command have experienced increases across some crime types and that alcohol is having a significant impact in offences against the person.

Katherine recorded some increases when compared with the previous year.

Assaults increased by 20 per cent (99 more reported offences to total 595 year on year), sexual assaults fell by 18.8 per cent (six fewer offences).

House break-ins rose slightly by 9.2 per cent (10 offences to total 119 year on year).

Commander Tonkin said the Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors at licensed premises point of sale venues within the Katherine region continue to work tirelessly to assist licensees.

Domestic violence related assaults in Katherine have increased by 15.5 per cent (56 incidents).

Alcohol related assaults have increased by 20.9 per cent (69 incidents).

These increases have been constantly noted across the Northern Territory.

"Our road policing activities are continuing across the Command. I remind all Territorians to start planning for the wet season, drive to the conditions particularly if driving in heavy rain or across flooded roadways and ensure their households are cyclone ready."
