Katherine Outback Experience hosted an outback show for kids on Wednesday evening, giving school-aged children the chance to get up close and personal with animals great and small.

With regular host and owner Tom Curtain touring Western Australia, his staff decided to put on a free show with some of the trainee dogs and farm animals.

Lakmini Yapa took her family to the show and said her children enjoyed it.

"My oldest is scared of dogs... but the kids have so much fun," she said.

There was a range of activities on offer, including feeding the animals, playing with dogs, and a whip cracking contest between the staff and the crowd.

Ms Yapa said she'd like to see more of these events in Katherine because finding activities for children during the school holidays can be a hard task.

"It's good for school holidays... in Katherine we don't have so much stuff," she said.

"I want to see more."

Ms Yapa wasn't the only parent or child enthusiastic about the idea, with many families leaving happy at the end of the night.

The NT school term restarts for most children on February 1, with remote schools restarting on February 2.
