Two sessions were held by KRA with 25 people aged from 11 years and up, introducing them to basic photo composition techniques as well as the various free online editing programs.

Project manager Tom Danks said the group were fast learners.

"I was personally blown away by how quickly all the kids picked up the techniques and they came out with some really meaningful images of one another."

He said this is just the beginning, as KRA plans to develop an existing space into an editing and recording suite while also hosting a broad range of digital arts and media programs for 2021.

"The portrait workshops we've held over the last few days are part of a broader transition KRA is making into the digital arts and media space," Mr Danks said.

"I can't wait to see what opportunities and works will come out of these programs as we keep developing digital capacity throughout this year."

Mr Danks said the program focused on artistic expression in photography and was about more than taking a pretty picture.

"Digital media is an ideal fit for the youth profiles we see in the Katherine region," he said.

"It's also a really powerful tool for transcending barriers of culture, language and distance.

"We spoke with them about identity and representation through photography, and they were really able to take that and apply it to angles, expressions and posture which is just super impressive."

KRA executive officer Jacinta Mooney said the photography workshops were part of a broader school holiday program aimed at stoking creativity in Katherine's young people.

"The photography workshops have been two of KRA's four programs over this summer holiday period," she said.

"It's incredibly important that Katherine continues banding together to provide skills and entertainment to youth in this town while they don't have school to be occupied with.

"We look forward to a continued and creative engagement in school holiday activities going forward."
