The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a medium chance of showers in Katherine on Thursday through to Sunday, with the chance of a thunderstorm.
BoM is also watching the weather off the coast of WA where there is a significant chance of a tropical cyclone developing sometime in the next week, putting coastal communities in WA and the NT at risk.
The Bureau has announced a tropical low, which developed over the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria in recent days, has moved away from the NT and over the Cape York Peninsula and is no longer expected to become a tropical cyclone.
BOM's weather models indicate the current monsoon bringing wet weather to most of northern Australia could continue for another week or longer.
Widespread rainfall brings with it the risk of flooding, which is made worse by near-saturated soils across the north of Australia due to above-average rainfall for the wet season so far.
According to forecasters, the monsoon system also brings above-average risk of tropical low and cyclone development, which explains the likely cyclone developing off the coast of WA.
Katherine has seen some rain so far this week, with the town recording between 11-16mm in parts on Tuesday night.
In the week leading up to Australia Day the Katherine region received 100-150mm of rain, depending on the location of the weather gauge.
The highest weekly total for the NT was recorded at Channel point, which saw 254mm.
Katherine Town Council facilities such as the Low Level Bridge crossing and Hot Springs remain closed due to a fluctuating river level.
While it still sits relatively low, the river got as high as 6.6 metres on Monday afternoon before dropping to 4.7 metres at the time of writing.
