The government might be escalating its pressure on the tech giant, but to them, Australia is just a drop in the ocean.
There's a long list of cities across the globe of which the population dwarfs Australia as a country.
The Katherine Times, like all news publishers in Australia, is banned from posting news links, videos or any form of content on our Facebook pages or groups - and while the government is in negotiations, we are not sure how long it will last.
It has left a gaping void on the platform where pertinent updates on COVID-19, weather crises, reports on crime, investigations into the government and thought-provoking think-pieces previously circulated.
It doesn't mean journalists across Australia have stopped writing, it just means content is no longer served up on a dominant platform which had nearly all eyes glued to it.
The content is still there, where it always was. It will take just a little more effort to access it.
The way that we access news has changed significantly over the past 20 years - towns with newspapers are now a dying breed, and 'fake news' is in abundance.
Following Facebook's bold move, much of the focus has been on the negative, but if fact we have just been offered a golden opportunity to rewire our brains and be seekers of reputable news instead of vacuously reading whatever comes across our feeds.
It is now more important that ever to support local journalism - amid a global pandemic and an environment on the brink of collapse, the ban leaves space for a proliferation of misinformation.
Our journalists, like many, work hard to provide local, up-to-date news to the community and we wanted to make you aware of all the ways you can still access our content.
