Kalano Bombers Football Club have been rebadged the Garrak Bombers Sporting Association.
"It's got a good ring to it doesn't it," Garrak Bombers coach and mentor Denis Coburn said.
Garrak is the Jawoyn word for black cockatoo, the men's football team captain Gabriel Henry said.
He said the change symbolises a new direction for the sports club.
Mr Henry said the name change is part of a broader push to attract more players to the club, even if they are not associated with the Kalano Community Association.
The club's base is in Miali Brumby, an Aboriginal community run by Kalano which neighbours Katherine.
"The Jawoyn people they're sharing their culture with outsiders too, that's what we're trying to do, share culture inside the footy club and outside as well."
"Share the country inside and outside (the Jawoyn community)."
Mr Coburn said the club wants to send an inclusive message because many of their 60-player list do not live in Miali Brumby.
He said the name change will generate more interest for the club by showing they are a "broader church" than just people linked with Kalano.
"A lot of our players come from Rockhole and Binjari... and some from east-side (Katherine town)."
"We want to make it a bit bigger, and a broader appeal across the board... Kalano is really the association that runs this area but it doesn't represent all the people who we're trying to get involved."
Mr Coburn said the club is also planning to expand beyond football and offer opportunities for women's teams if there is interest.
"It's not really all about the name... it's an organisation which will also hopefully embrace other sports," he said.
"If the girls want to get a football team organised under the banner... we can support that.
"If the blokes want to do something else like basketball the Garrak Bombers Sporting Association is there to fund those groups and organise them."
He said the Garrak Bombers are already looking for new members.
"If people want to get involved with an Indigenous sporting club in the town, you can come down and join this one."
