Angus Pickering 17, took his comedy skit "Letters to Scomo" all the way to the final stage of the Class Clowns comedy competition, which was put together in late March by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
He said the show pokes fun at Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and is based on issues affecting young people, such as their education.
"I wrote theoretical letters to Scomo asking about schools and stuff, and I wrote back letters from his point of view, based on interviews and what he's said in parliament," Angus said.
"All the political heat he has on him right now, just mocking him about that."
Angus entered the skit, which he performed live on stage, to the Class Clowns NT heat, which he won.
This gave him the chance to perform in front of 300 people at Melbourne's Forum Theatre as part of the national Class Clowns event.
While he did not win, one of the judges was on the lookout for young talent for a part in an upcoming TV show, which Angus successfully auditioned for.
"Sadly I wasn't the winner... I still got a great opportunity from having a casting agent at the performance," he said.
"He really liked my act and he said I should audition."
Angus cannot reveal any details of the show or his part, but he did say it was shot in Alice Springs.
The TV show was not the first time Angus has been on camera, after he starred as an extra in the feature film Top End Wedding in 2018.
While Angus has also worked with Opera Australia, and sometimes takes to the stage as a musician, he said a career in the performing arts is not where his future lies when he leaves school at the end of 2021.
"I'll have acting as more of a side profession maybe, and I'll take up something else," he said.
"Next year I'm going to take a gap year... then after that I'll probably go to uni."
