The Northern Territory Government granted $6.9 million to the Katherine Town Council (KTC) for infrastructure upgrades at both the showgrounds and the sportsgrounds, in line with KTC's Infrastructure Masterplan priorities.
The remaining $5 million will contribute to the replacement of Don Dale Pavilion at the sportsgrounds with a new structure, which is scheduled to be completed by December, 2021.
"This major update to Katherine's community assets is an investment for the future," Minister for Sport, Kate Worden, said.
"These works will contribute greatly to the vibrant community, boost the economy and help create local jobs."
Council will use other unspent grant money to cover the shortfall between the remaining $5 million funding allocation and the final cost.
The work conducted at the showground, as part of the camp draft facility, included:
- a new ring road and entry design,
- a new amenities building,
- upgrades to the camping area,
- extension to and air-conditioning of the Turf Pavilion,
- and a new cattle laneway and loading ramp.
"I am delighted to see the completion of the upgrades as this major community facility is much loved and well-used and will be a focal point for generations to come," Ms Worden added.
