The Safe, Respected and Free from Violence Prevention Grants are provided to support localised projects, activities, actions and pilot programs that seek to challenge and change social and cultural attitudes, values and structures that underpin domestic, family and sexual violence.
Each year,individual grants of up to $150,000 are available to organisations aiming to contribute towards the development and implementation of good practice, evidence-based domestic and family violence prevention and early intervention activities individual grants of up to $150,000 are available to organisations aiming to contribute towards the development and implementation of good practice, evidence-based domestic and family violence prevention and early intervention activities in the Northern Territory.
The grant applications are assessed by an expert panel comprised of government and non-government members.
Ten applications were successful and will receive a total of $1,322,360 through the Safe, Respected and Free from Violence Prevention Grants 2021 grant round.
The recipients are:
- Save the Children Australia to deliver the collaborative 'Binjari, a Safe Place for Families to Thrive' project in Binjari.
- Jawoyn Association Aboriginal Corporation to undertake the 'Growing Strongbala Way - Weaving Together for Support and Change' project in Barunga and Beswick.
- The UMNT (United Muslims of the NT) 'Nissa' (' Women' in Arabic) project, which will include innovative and interactive workshops and a multilingual media campaign focusing on gender equality. This will be delivered in Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
- The Tennant Creek Women's Refuge's 'Talking Respect Workforce Development Project', which will be delivered in Tennant Creek and the Barkly region, Alice Springs, Nhulunbuy and Darwin.
- The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) 'Mediation Training for Elders' in remote Communities project to be delivered in Galiwin'ku, Lajamanu, Maningrida, Ngukurr, Wadeye and Wurrumiyanga.
- IBC (Identify, Belonging and Connection) Community Services will partner with Darwin Indigenous Men's Service, Darwin Aboriginal and Islander Women's Shelter, City of Darwin, City of Palmerston and the YMCA to deliver the 'Strong and Connected Communities' project in Darwin and Palmerston.
- Ruby Gaea Darwin Centre Against Rape to provide the 'Personal Protection Strategies' project for women and people from LGBTQIA+ communities in Darwin, Palmerston and Humpty Doo.
- Desert Knowledge Australia to deliver the 'Codes 4 Life Women Program' at Borroloola.
- Yalu Marnggithinyaraw Indigenous Corporation to provide the 'Men Protecting Children and Partners and Family with Respectful Behaviour - Dirramurruwurr dhu ga Djaga Milyalk Djamarrkuliw ga Gurrutumirriw Mala Ngayanguy Manymakdhu ga Makmakhhunamirriy Rom. Dhu ga Guyanganhawuyu' project in Galiwin'ku, Millingimbi, Gapuwiyak and Ramingining.
- Yugul Mangi Development Aboriginal Corporation to deliver the 'Ngukurr Family Violence Prevention Videos' project in Ngukurr and Rittarangu.
"Domestic, family and sexual violence affects the whole community. It is only through a united effort from governments, communities and individuals that we can reduce its impact and prevalence," Minister for Territory Families and Urban Housing, Kate Worden said.
"The Territory Labor Government will continue to lobby the Federal Government for funding as we know strong prevention infrastructure and programs is the way we change thinking towards Family and Domestic violence."
These grants fall under the Northern Territory Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Reduction Framework 2018-2028 Safe, Respected and Free from Violence.
