Finke Desert Race, in partnership with Motorsport Australia, confirmed they are undertaking an investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued on June 15 by Finke Desert Race, committee president, Antony Yoffa extended his condolences to all effected by the incident.

"We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and all those who have been impacted by this incident," he said.

"We appreciate the efforts of all officials and volunteers across the weekend and commend the patience and understanding of competitors and spectators during this particularly difficult time.

"On behalf of the Finke Desert Race committee, I'd also like to acknowledge the work of emergency services and first responders across the weekend."

Northern Territory police confirmed the ACT man died immediately after being struck by a vehicle that left the track on Monday morning (June 14), 35km from the start/finish line.

A male spectator in his 50s was also injured in the incident as was the female navigator of the vehicle who is also her 50s, with both transported to Royal Adelaide Hospital and Alice Springs Hospital, respectively.

Northern Territory Police are calling for any witnesses of the incident to contact police immediately on 131 444.
