Turning 10 this year, the Territory's largest cycling event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 25 with five distances ranging from the 145km gran fondo to a three kilometre mini fondo.
Katherine rider, Craig Baxter said he started riding to keep fit and healthy, but now it had turned into a passion.
"It began as a real fitness kick," Mr Baxter said.
"I'm a member of the Multi Sport Club here in Katherine and the cycling community is really diverse. We have a bit of road cycling, but also a mountain bike section. It's really well represented."
His training has increased in the lead up to the event and it's all about continually improving.
"It's be my fifth time competing in the Top End Gran Fondo," Mr Baxter said.
"It was initially all about the challenge of just getting to the end. Now it's something I work for every year. I ride now 250km a week in the lead up to it.
"I'm hoping to do the best I can and beat my time last year. It's a real personal journey for me and I'm looking forward to the event."
All routes start from the Darwin Waterfront, with longer options extending past Palmerston, into Berry Springs and returning to Darwin.
The event has grown in popularity each year to attract not only Top Enders, but also people across the Territory and interstate.
Minister for Major Events, Natasha Fyles said the Gran Fondo was a sensational event for anyone who loved to cycle, whether a pro or just starting out.
"Bike sales have gone through the roof since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared last year," Ms Fyles said.
"This year's Gran Fondo should provide plenty of competition for competitive cyclists and a cracking atmosphere of likeminded people for those who just want to have an enjoyable day out on two wheels.
"Not only does Gran Fondo attract more visitors to the Top End, it provides an opportunity for Territorians to get active and lead a healthy lifestyle."
