All of the classroom teachers at a remote community school near Katherine are stranded interstate in Covid-19 lockdown with Term 3 starting this week.
The NT Department of Education confirmed seven out of seven classroom teachers from Wugularr School in Beswick are currently impacted by Covid restrictions in Victoria.
More Covid-19 news:
A spokesperson from the Department said teachers were being brought in from the surrounding area to manage the situation, and that students were not being impacted.
"Contingency plans have been put in place for this school to ensure students can continue learning and there is no impact on the start of Term 3. This includes support being provided by educators from neighbouring schools and the Katherine regional education office," the spokesperson said.
"The school principal has been keeping in regular contact with the educators to provide support, keep them informed and will welcome their return to school as soon as they can get back to the Northern Territory."
Australian Education Union NT President Jarvis Ryan said while it was a difficult time for Wugularr School, it was important to protect local residents from Covid-19.
"With remote communities in particular there is acute awareness that there is a particularly vulnerable population there, [so] there needs to be an added level of care in our teachers and education staff," he said.
"We must do everything we can to minimise the coronavirus getting into communities, certainly until we've got very high rates of vaccination."
