Mr Chapman moved to Katherine in 2004 to work as a linguist at Katherine's Aboriginal Language Centre and since then has worked as a trainee community educator with the Aboriginal Resource and Development Services and for the Central Land Council overseeing the Lajamanu Kurdiji governance project.
Now working part-time while completing a Masters of Evaluation, Mr Chapman said he wanted to run for council to help make Katherine more "welcoming, sustainable and safe."
KATHERINE COUNCIL ELECTIONS
"I am excited by a growing movement across the NT of people passionate about protecting our environment, working towards reconciliation and creating sustainable, resilient communities," he said.
"I decided to run for Council to advocate for policies and programs that will positively contribute to these goals."
Mr Chapman said, if elected, he would implement measures to make Katherine more connected and self-reliant.
"We all need to get back out on our streets and meet each other and work together to create the community we want to live in," he said.
"While this is up to all of us as Katherinites, Council could help by assisting with neighbourhood street events, continuing to sponsor cultural activities and promoting active transport and lifestyles."
He also said he wants to support measures to make Katherine more self-sustainable.
"[Such as] supporting backyard and small-scale food growing and production and fostering a Katherine-specific food culture not reliant on importing huge amounts of food from southern markets [and] assisting homeowners and renters to implement energy and resource saving strategies."
