But a group of scruffy men in flannel shirts, known as the Choir of Man, is going to smash this stereotype when they perform in Katherine this weekend.
The Choir of Man will be backing up Darwin-based band David Garnham & the Reasons to Live will be one of the acts playing a special Territory Day show at the Katherine showgrounds on Sunday night.
Mr Garnham described the choir as a group of "ramshackle regular blokes."
"There's some public servants, tradies, a couple of musos but mostly blokes who've barely sung in the shower, never mind on stage."
OTHER NEWS:
He said the choir, which was first formed almost ten years ago, started as a "gimmick".
But, Mr Garnham said shows featuring the Choir of Man have always been a huge success.
"It started more as a gimmick to get a festival show back in 2012," he said.
"We thought it would just be a one off thing but people loved the show."
Mr Garnham said the choir also provided community for men and a chance to get out of their comfort zone.
"The feedback from the choir back to me is that it really is like a men's shed," he said.
"Singing probably isn't really considered necessarily a masculine behaviour. You've got a room full of hairy rough looking dudes.
"[But], the act of signing just puts you in a good mood."
He said punters at the Katherine show can expect to hear "a combination of the greatest hits of the Choir of Man" with a song everyone will know to finish off the show.
Other acts on the lineup include; local artists Hope Campbell, Gypsy Schmidt, the K-town Cruzers, and the Katherine Regional Arts Choir, with Kamahi Djordon King as MC.
