This weekend
Help get Katherine prepared for the upcoming wet season by doing some cleaning up around town to ensure no rubbish is ending up washing into the river. Bring a hat, closed in shoes, sunscreen and a water bottle. All volunteers receive an ice cream voucher and into the draw to win prizes. Saturday, September 25. 7.30am to 11.30am. Registrations at Ryan Park (near the old railway bridge).

Meeting of cultures
One of Indigenous Australia's finest vocalists meets Middle Eastern orchestral harmonies. Join Galpu songman Guwanbal Gurruwiwi from Galiwin'ku and Netanela Mizrahi from Darwin. BITE
For foodies
The inaugural Best Ingredients of the Top End (BITE) has been a month-long celebration of local produce, indulging taste buds and embracing local ingredients. Upcoming events include a guided tour of the Tropiculture Australia nursery and orchard (September 25), an in-depth look at different cuts of meat at DoubleTree Darwin thanks to Eva Valley Meats (September 27), and following the journey from cocoa bean to chocolate bark at the Darwin Chocolate Factory (October 2). Roar Art Designs
Exhibition
An exhibition by Jenny Grahek and students of Roar Art Designs. Jenny is a mandala dot artist and teacher, and the pieces on display will highlight the her skills and her students' work. Saturday, September 25. Noon to 3pm. The Finch Cafe, 3/16 First Street.
Oktoberfest
A taste of Germany
Try out some traditional German food and meats, and delight in the beer specials as Oktoberfest hits town. There will be live oompah music, plus K-Town Cruzers, a yodelling competition, best-dressed awards and a bratwurst eating contest. It will be fun for the family with games for the kids. Experts on Everything
Dinner and a show
There's always one at every party, but at this show they have taken over. Rebecca and Jon Bode - the two self-proclaimed experts - turn musical theatre upside down and opera is covered in comedy. Family Fun Day
Get along
The Katherine Museum will host a Family Fun Day with plenty to see and do for the young ones. As well as face painting, circus fun and a petting zoo, there will be messy play activities, arts and crafts, a book giveaway and free barbecue. Monday, September 27. 10am to 1pm.
Headstone dedication
Paying respects
There will be a headstone dedication service for an Aboriginal war hero at the end of the month. Corporal Frederick Prentice was born in Powell Creek, NT in 1894 and served in World War I. Holiday activity
If you're looking for a school activity with a green twist, why not try creating and decorating your own pot plant? To be held at the Girl Guides hut in Stuttered Street, the event is open to children of all ages with no bookings required. Friday, October 1. 10am to noon.
