I attended many of the NAIDOC celebrations that were held over the week - morning teas, barbecues and story time at the library. All these events were well attended.
The community clean-up was held on September 25th with 37 volunteers registered. 34 bags of rubbish were picked up and 3 bags of 10 c cans. A huge effort by all. Pancakes were supplied by Christoph our ranger and the day was coordinated by Carris. Thank you to all for a really productive morning.
We celebrated National Police Remembrance Day on September 29th. The lights in the Town Square were blue for the week.
This month is also Breast Cancer Awareness month. Council dressed up the front counter in pink. There were businesses that also had pink decorations, donation plates and other fundraising activities - a very worthy cause.
More council news:
There was a headstone dedication Service for CPL Frederick Prentice MM, a WWI soldier. Thank you NORFORCE, Ellen Gough, Juanita Heparia, Shirley Smith, Simmone Croft and the late Mike Reed for the work and dedication to finally have a plaque dedicated to Frederick.
There was an Elected Member Symposium for our newly elected Councillors over two days in Darwin. It was organised by LGANT. Members had the opportunity to learn about meetings, code of conduct etc.
Katherine Town Council will be commencing recruitment for the Chief Executive Officer position. Our current CEO, Mr Ian Bodill, is coming to the end of his contract and will be concluding his employment at the end of January 2022. Mr Bodill will be sorely missed as he has had an immense impact on Council, our operations, services and culture. We will be sorry to see him go and thank him for his vast contributions he has undertaken during his employment with Council, and wish him all the very best on whatever his future endeavours entails.
The Sports Pavilion is coming along very well. It is nearly ready for the roof. It certainly looks impressive as you drive by.
I'm looking forward to our first good showers to help cool everything down again.
Lis Clark is the Mayor of Katherine Town Council
