Areas of extreme heatwave are forecast for the Top End, with temperatures in the Big Rivers region forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology to be in the high 30s to low 40s into next week.
Possible thunderstorms are also forecast.
The BoM's Heatwave Service provides heatwave assessments and forecast updates, with the extreme conditions expected to ease slightly towards the end of the week.

NT WorkSafe said that heat related illnesses could range from heat rashes, heat cramps and dehydration to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can be fatal.
Symptoms of heat related illnesses can include:
- excessive sweating,
- muscle cramps,
- nausea and vomiting.
Some safety tips to help guard against heat related illness include:
- Drink water regularly.
- Use shade protection, a hat and sun screen.
- Check your personal protective equipment is appropriate for the type of work being done and the amount of sun you are exposed to.
- Schedule work to avoid the hottest part of the day
