The 2021/22 Katherine Rugby Union season kicked off on Friday night, with last year's champions the Katherine Barbarians taking on the Tindal Lions.
The Lions had not had a team in the competition for seven years, with captain Tom Lewsley thrilled to be leading his team back into the competition.
Although they lost to the Barbarians 55 to nil, Barbarians Captain Clinton St Clair said he expects the team to become a tough competitor as the season progresses.
"Although our team comprehensively won, it wasn't easy and we really enjoyed the game against the Lions," he said.
"It is so good to have them back in the competition."

Barbarians President Marc Gardner said the return of the Lions was a great thing for the competition overall.
"It is really good to see Tindal Lions back in the Katherine Rugby Union competition after an absence of many years. They have a really great and fit team that will be a force to reckon with over the coming season," he said.
"Having the Lions back creates a better competition and something our Barbarian's team will relish, particularly having well fought games.
"With more competition it makes playing rugby in Katherine extremely worthwhile and hopefully provide great entertainment for the public."
Gardner said there were not enough participants to form a women's competition this year like previous years, but that he hopes there will be in the future.
"We will try the best we can to ensure that women's rugby gets back on its feet as well," he said.
The competition ran with the assistance of a number of volunteers and with the help of Jack Morrison and Nick Freney who officiated the game.
The Katherine Rugby Union season runs until March 2022, with games each Friday night at the Katherine Town Oval.
The Barbarians are set to take on the Katherine Pirates this Friday October 29 at 7pm.
