Northern Territory Police have charged a 33-year-old man in relation to a serious assault in Mataranka.

During the early hours of Wednesday morning, police located an injured woman on the side of the road.
She was taken to Katherine District Hospital before being transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital due to her injuries.

A 33-year-old man was arrested later that morning and has been charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious bodily harm, breaching a domestic violence order and being armed with an offensive weapon.
The man has been remanded to appear before Katherine Local Court on Friday.
"This was a horrific assault, Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lawson said.
"Family violence has no place in our society and police urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact us."
