Of all Australia's many idyllic island experiences, the Whitsundays tend to hold a special place in our hearts, particularly because of their signature crystal clear waters as well as their proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, the pride and joy of our island continent.

If you're greatly anticipating your next getaway following these past two or so years of being in and out of COVID-19 lockdowns, then chances are you've already been looking at potential vacation destinations. The Whitsundays may already be on your list, but if it isn't currently, then prepare to be transported!

Here's all you can look forward to when setting sail for the Whitsunday Islands this summer.

Sunbathing in some luxury accommodation

There's no better way to enjoy all the natural beauty of the Whitsunday archipelago than by lounging on your own private beach.

Luxury resorts like the Daydream Island Resort that can be found on the small yet serene Daydream Island, provides its guests with just this singular experience.

Daydream Island itself only measures 1km in length, meaning that resort-goers can walk the length of the island in next to no time, and select from your pick of a handful of gorgeous beaches, including Sunset Beach and the secluded Lovers Cove, all of which you won't have to share with anyone else aside from maybe just a handful of other vacationers staying at the resort.

The Molle Islands to the east of Daydream also boasts a selection of stunning beachside accommodation options, as do all the other islands that make up this cheery cluster that hugs the coast of Queensland.

As the Molle Islands are also home to the Molle Islands National Park, this island may be the perfect destination for adventurous vacationers in particular. Be sure to take some time to find accommodation that best caters to your interests to ensure that you'll be able to make the most of your time in the Whitsundays.

Must-add items to your island hopping itinerary

If you'd rather go bounding than lounging, then you'll be happy to hear that there's plenty to see and do all across the Whitsunday Islands, with each land mass boasting its own plethora of fun activities and destinations.

There are, however, a selection of activities that have been deemed 'must-adds' to your Whitsundays itinerary.

The most quintessential Whitsunday holiday activity has to be taking some time out to go on a tour of the Great Barrier Reef. You can book a tour with a dedicated guide or hire a boat and head out on the open waters yourself to visit all of the Whitsundays' best snorkelling spots independently.

A jet ski tour can also take you across all the islands that comprise this glorious coastal landscape, and let you explore all of the pristine beaches that make up the Whitsundays in your own time. If riding a jet ski isn't enough adventure for you, you may even decide to go skydiving above Airlie Beach!

Taking up a new holiday hobby

Alongside snorkelling, ocean kayaking, jet skiing, and a myriad of other water sports, the Whitsundays is also home to some internationally recognised golf courses, including the Hamilton Island Golf Course.

It's no surprise as to why Hamilton Island's green is referred to as one of the most breathtaking golf courses that can be found in the world. Being able to tee off with sapphire blue seas all around you is like something out of a dream in itself.

Even if you only play a handful of holes here, chances are you still won't forget the experience anytime soon.

If golf isn't your thing, then you could head out on a sailing voyage and flex your skills as a budding skipper.

Chartering a yacht in the Whitsundays is a fairly simple process, as many locals and vacationers alike consider travelling by the sea to be the best approach to taking in all that the Whitsundays have to offer.

If you're totally new to the world of sailing, you may even decide to sign up for some basic courses to really enrich your summer getaway!

Getting up close and personal with Whistunday wildlife

It wouldn't be a trip to the Whitsundays without a good trek through the towering eucalypts and green gullies that cover these lush islands from head to toe.

There's a myriad of hiking and biking trails all across the Whitsunday Islands for you and your fellow travellers to explore.

Some of these trails may even take you up high where you'll be able to enjoy the stunning Whitsundays vista, and take panoramic shots of the deep viridian waters of the peaceful Pacific Ocean at any time of the year.

Along these trails, you may even be able to get up close and personal with some of the Whitsundays' more elusive residents: it's native wildlife.

If you hike in the early morning or around dusk at the Conway National Park, you may be able to come across a shy Proserpine rock-wallaby, a stoic lace monitor or goanna, and other flighty creatures like the black flying fox.

Walking by the coast you may spot some sea turtles nearing the shores in search of food, or if you're lucky, you may be able to see some playful whales or dolphins on the horizon too!

There's lots to see and do when you take a trip to the Whitsundays, with lounging on Whitehaven Beach or the region's other many breathtaking seascapes being just the tip of the iceberg here.

Be sure to consider all these attractions and activities when finalising your itinerary and looking at Whitsunday Islands hotels, just to ensure that you're getting the absolute most out of your Whitsundays experience.
