The Bureau of Meteorology said that Beswick is expected to be impacted by rising flood waters in the Waterhouse catchment. The Katherine River is forecast to hit moderate flood levels.

There is a risk that the tropical low will become slow moving or move slowly south over the Territory from Friday and into the weekend.

The BoM said that widespread rainfall totals of 30-70 mm had been recorded in parts of North West Coastal and Waterhouse catchments during the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday.

Significant flooding of low lying areas and rising rivers are expected, with roads to be impacted.

The number of river catchments likely to be affected have increased to include Upper Victoria River, Victoria below Kalkarindji, Fitzmaurice, Tiwi Islands, Mary, Upper Adelaide, Adelaide below Adelaide River Town, Finniss, Lower Daly, Daly above Douglas, Katherine, Moyle, South Alligator, Wildman, Groote Eylandt, Waterhouse and Roper.

Earlier: A flood watch is in place for Katherine and Waterhouse rivers as cyclone Tiffany brings storms and heavy rainfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology said that daily rainfall totals of 50-150 mm with isolated falls of 150-300 mm were possible across the Carpentaria coastal rivers on Wednesday and Thursday and might also extend into the North West coastal rivers from Thursday.

The river catchments likely to be affected are the Lower Daly, Daly above Douglas, Katherine, Walker, Groote Eylandt, Waterhouse, Rope and Towns.

Most of the rivers in the area are moderately dry, however recent showers and storms mean that could quickly change as the system approaches land.

The BoM said that significant flooding of low lying areas and rising rivers was expected, with many roads and highways likely to be affected.

Some communities and homesteads may become isolated and the BoM advised that people should check road conditions before travelling.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advised people to stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways, prepare for flooding and avoid driving into floodwaters.
