Executive Officer for KRA, Jacinta Mooney, said the book press was stolen from the front door of their building last Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
Ms Mooney said the theft was devastating because of the item's sentimental value.
"It was owned by an ex-teacher from Katherine High who tragically died early young. She had gifted it to KRA," she said.
More news:
"It's been sitting at the front of Katherine Regional Arts for about five and a half years.
"We're a community arts, not for profit organization. To have someone rip that off, it's pretty low."
Ms Mooney said the theft would have required a good deal of planning.
"It's very, very heavy, it would have taken two people and I don't think they could get it in the backseat of a car.
"So obviously they had planned it."
She said she wanted to provide an opportunity for the thieves to return the item with no questions asked, and has also reported the theft to police.
If anyone has any information regarding the theft of the book press, they are encouraged to contact Katherine Regional Arts on 0488 999 901 or NT Police on 131 444.
