Karl has been volunteering with the Katherine Emergency Services Volunteer unit for around a year since moving to town from Darwin, where he spent nine years volunteering with their NTES team.
He said he initially got involved because it would look good on his resume, but around a decade later, he hasn't been able to give it up.
"Feeling good, I guess just comes out of the doing the job," he said.
More news:
"But the social aspect is a good one because it gets me out of the house. And just being involved in the community and looking after others who are unable to look after themselves or are in dire need of it."
He said despite what some may think, you don't need to be a thrillseeker to work with the emergency services team.
"You can sometimes be thrown in the deep end, but we always provide you with a basic level of training first. We make sure that you have the basic level, and then we slowly introduce you to new courses," Mr Kratschmer said.
"It's just learning key little things and then having that under your belt means that you're able to help those people who are qualified in that in those call outs."
Mr Kratschmer said some of his highlights of his time with the NTES have included assisting after the disappearance of the MH370 flight in 2014.
"Me and three others including Gary Casey (from the Palmerston unit) got to head down to Perth to be involved in the AMSA search," he said.
"For someone who is looking to join, it's always just one of the things, just give it a try."
