Chief Minister Michael Gunner said from Monday masks will no longer be required in indoor settings, other than in high-risk locations such as hospitals and aged-care facilities.

However, he said they remain strongly recommended, especially where social distancing is difficult.

Some areas of the territory, where virus numbers have not come down as much, may also continue to have wider mask mandates but that will be reviewed later this week.

Mr Gunner said the territory had "stared down" the Omicron wave.

"We can now say with some certainty we have passed the peak," he said.

"It is time for the territory to enter the next phase, where we continue to live with the virus but with more freedom and more personal responsibility."

Deputy Chief Health Officer Charles Pain said while case numbers had stabilised it was entirely possible they could rise again with the removal of masks.

"That's why we've taken time to make this decision," he said. "We'll be watching that closely and we will act if we need to."

The change comes as the territory reported 624 new virus infections on Wednesday.

Two more deaths were also revealed, while 76 people are in hospital with the virus, including two in intensive care.

The death toll in the territory since the start of the pandemic stands at 26.

Mr Gunner also revealed the NT would immediately end the need for people to check-in except at venues that required a proof of someone's vaccination status such as licensed bars and restaurants.

Other businesses can choose to continue displaying check-in information, but do not have to, and patrons can continue to check-in if they wish.

The chief minister said the easing of restrictions did not mean the risk posed by COVID-19 had disappeared.

"But after these last few months we also know that we can live with the virus, and get on with things, as we must," he said.

"And all the data we have gives us confidence that we can manage this."
