Councillor's at Tuesday night's Katherine Town Council meeting voted unanimously in favour of permanently installing the sculpture, which is set to be painted bright pink, on Railway Terrace, adjacent to the Town Square.
The sculpture, which stands four metres high, was made in 2020 as a part of the NT School Holidays Program by local artist Patrick Bauer at KRA with the help of Nellie Pepperill, Tianah Law, Xavier Matthews, Connor Sarney-Scotney, and Keegan Frean.
More news:
It will be displayed at this year's Katherine Junk Festival on June 4 before settling into its new home.
"Katherine is known for its art, with all of our beautiful murals," Katherine Mayor Lis Clark said.
"This is another example of the strong arts environment that we enjoy here."
KRA executive officer Jacinta Mooney said the sculpture, which is holding a fishing reel and a barramundi, encapsulates Katherine perfectly.
"We're absolutely delighted with this decision, it was a labour of love," she said.
The transformer was made using materials from Mr Bauer's 1992 Toyota Celica, plus an old gas bottle for its head.
"It tells viewers that things should be reused, to consider what you buy, and think about what you are consuming,"
Any costs associated with ensuring the sculpture is safely placed will be funded by the Big Rivers Department of The Chief Minister and Cabinet, Northern Territory Government.
