Katherine local Andrea Steranko-Field, 29, starred for the Australian side in the Women's Ice Hockey World Championships in New Zealand last month.
“We played and won against much stronger countries”, Ms Steranko-Field said.
The ex-Canadian first visited Australia seven years ago when she met her police officer husband, Nick.
After living in Brisbane, the couple moved to Darwin and then eventually Katherine at the beginning of the year.
When asked what her proudest achievement in the sport was, the ice hockey star said earning a full university scholarship to the University of Maine.
The Adelaide Adrenaline player travels 3000 km every fortnight to get to her home ice to both play and train throughout Australia’s ice hockey season which is played from October to May.
The Australian team does not receive any government assistance or sponsorships, so the players pay their own way.
“This year it cost us around $5000 to get to the Worlds in New Zealand,” she said.
Ms Steranko-Field said she hopes that ice hockey will increase in popularity in Australia and hopefully generate much needed funding.
