Katherine senior ranger John Burke said traditional owners and elders at 1 Mile Community believe the large freshie was responsible for snatching the dog.
Meanwhile, Katherine rangers have placed the first of ten permanent dry season crocodile traps in river systems around Katherine.
The trap was placed at Novus Quarry last week.
Mr Burke said saltwater crocodiles measuring over 4m had been caught in the trap in previous years.
The ranger said croc sightings had been reported at Donkey Camp and Galloping Jacks.
