Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.
NOTHING says ‘dedication’ like a working mother who still finds time to throw herself into helping the community and giving her time to others, and Katherinite Kelly Rosas wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Kelly has three beautiful young children – this young family – and yet she finds the time to be involved in so many things,” long-time friend Clare Pearce said.
Kelly’s husband Dwayne Rosas agrees.
“Monday and Wednesday she does Judo with the kids, Tuesday she’s at athletics training, Thursday is Girl Guides, Friday is athletics, Saturday and Sunday she might sometimes get a rest.”
And that’s not where it ends. As well as the heavy involvement she takes in children’s sport and ferrying around her very active children – Elyssia, 9, Tarkyne, 7 and Simeon, 5 – the 38 year old has just completed a diploma of Community Services with Charles Darwin University.
Kelly works for Mission Australia, providing financial advice and doing everything she can to help people with the basic struggles of life.
“She likes helping people ... It came from when she first worked for the Commonwealth Bank in Melbourne, where she always wanted to help people out. That’s her nature,” Dwayne said.
As well as keeping herself and her family fit and well (Kelly recently completed Darwin’s City to Surf run) she even finds time to oversee an all-in Rosas family footy tipping competition – coordinating a spreadsheet for family stretched across the Territory and into Queensland.
Having weathered losses of loved ones and tough times in her own family life, Dwayne said Kelly has never faltered in the time she spends helping others.
“She’s a very determined woman. Very hard working.”
And the hardest job she has?
“That’d be raising three Rosas kids,” Dwayne jokes.
