Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.
THERE are so many people in Katherine who seem to do the impossible: work, friends, family, life’s unexpected surprises and all at the same time devote their time and care to helping those around them and adding value to the community.
Tania Bangay would be the first to insist that she is not one of these, but those who know her, including close friend Vikki Budda, would insist she is.
“She’s a really active member of the community.
“She’s so easy going and caring and she’s always participating in different events around the community.
“She’s so busy, I don’t know how she does it,” Ms Budda said.
The 43-year-old mum of three young kids – Lillie, Gus and Lindsay – is certainly a jack of all trades, and appears to be a master of everything she tries.
Tania, who has lived in Katherine for 12 years, makes clothes, runs a massage stall at the Saturday market, teaches yoga and fitness training, as well as working Tuesdays and Thursdays for the Cancer Council.
However, as many in the town could attest, her commitment to this particular cause and its many fund-raising events means her commitment stretches far beyond just two days a week.
Chief of Tania’s voluntary commitments is her involvement with the committee of the Katherine Community Markets, which is now running in its fourth successful year.
“Norma Higgins got that market up and running with her business grant, and it’s just a great thing for the town to have.”
While Tania speaks of the huge hours of volunteering it took to get the market up and running, in typical self-effacing style, her focus is on the dedication and hard work of others, never herself.
“But when I think of someone who gives a lot to this community and those around them, I think of Tania,” Ms Budda said.
