Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.
TO THOSE in the police force in Katherine who undergo their defensive tactics and firearm training under the stern eye of Police Sergeant Ben Rossiter, it would be easy to assume that the grumpy, gruff exterior points to a cranky person underneath.
But little could be further from the truth for Sgt Rossiter, who for the past nine years living in Katherine has devoted himself to bettering the community and helping his fellow Katherinites.
The rugby enthusiast, and Public Officer of the Katherine Krocs Golden Oldies Rugby Club has been successfully melding sport with fund raising for a range of community causes for years.
“He raises funds for the Golden Oldies and really coordinates Movember for the police.
“He lost a loved one a long time ago, and the Movember cause is particularly close to his heart,” long-time friend and President of Katherine Krocs Sam Forwood said.
“He’s very good at getting people to do things – very persuasive in a good way.
“He’s just a very genuine man, a very honest, sort of no-bull man.
“What you see is what you get.”
Sergeant Rossiter is a devoted husband to wife, Vicki and their two children, Lachlan, 13 and Liberty, nine.
He is currently busy raising funds for the Golden Oldies’ trip to Fukuoka for the World Rugby Festival which will be held in Japan in October.
Sergeant Rossiter also runs a memorial rugby game – in which the Katherine Kops team, which he organises - plays the Katherine Krocs each year to raise money for the family of Brett Meredith, a local policeman who was killed by a king-hit at Katherine’s Club 23.
“He’s very social, he knows everyone in town, and he’s never afraid to ask people to pitch in and help one another out,” Mr Forwood said.
Every week the Community Hero celebrated in the Katherine Times receives at $50 Nitmiluk Gorge meal voucher.
