Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.
“A MODERN day saint” is how some friends describe Yvonne Schatz – a woman who has been tirelessly dedicated to the Katherine community for the last four decades.
With Mrs Schatz set to celebrate her 80th birthday today, August 1, Rachel Borneman said she couldn’t think of a better gift than to nominate her good friend as a true community hero.
“She and her husband Jack have lived in Katherine since the 1970s and raised their four boys, Tim, John, Steven and Andrew, here.
“Yvonne has continued to serve the Katherine community even through her retirement,” Ms Borneman said.
Yvonne has a long involvement with the St Pauls Anglican Church, both through volunteering at their Op Shop and through the breakfast they put on for indigenous people every Sunday morning.
She is also a volunteer in the Bethel Christian Bookshop.
“But,” Ms Borneman said, “It is really about the person Yvonne is. Her commitment, selflessness, listening skills, showing understanding, gracious, caring, gentle, peaceful and supportive nature.
“She listens so well, she is always so keen to hear about your story.”
Ms Borneman, who works for the Australian Society for Indigenous Languages, said she and Yvonne share a strong faith.
Her own mother’s friendship with Yvonne bonded them, and after returning to live in Katherine two years ago, Ms Borneman said she has received endless support from Yvonne.
“She takes care of everyone.
“She has always been a huge support to her husband Jack, as well as looking after her grand kids now.
“She is very on-the-ball.”
Every week the Community Hero celebrated in the Katherine Times receives at $50 Nitmiluk Gorge meal voucher.
