WHILE excessive speed and irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel have been lauded over the past week as the Top Gear team continued its Northern Territory adventure, it is only a matter of time before similar behaviour causes blood to be shed on the streets of Katherine.

In recent weeks, I have received several letters from residents voicing their concerns about hooning in town, with one suggesting that, sooner, rather than later, those using Giles Street at their personal drag strip would be responsible for the death of a pedestrian, cyclist or fellow motorist.
After witnessing a pair of muppets attempting to conquer the old airstrip on Sunday, I have to agree.
The drivers of the two vehicles in question raced one another along the runway before trying to exit via Cameron Street, only to be met by a steel barricade and numerous large rocks.
Seemingly confused by the obstacles, the drivers got out – clutching an obligatory beer – and swore at each other while they tried to work out whether or not they could create an exit route by moving the rocks.
When it dawned on them that the rocks were not going anywhere, they jumped back in the vehicles, completed a bit of circle work and then bounced across the paddock at a ludicrous rate of knots before pulling out onto Giles Street at well over the speed limit.
What would have happened if someone was walking their dog at the old airstrip – a spot popular with pet owners – when these two idiots decided to harness their inner Jeremy Clarkson?
There is a time and a place for testing your motoring ability and pushing the limits of your vehicle.
That place is not, nor ever will be, on our roads.
