WIELDING the willow was on everyone’s mind when 70 children took guard during NT Cricket’s Play Cricket afternoon on April 1.

The event was held as a prelude to the 2015 Katherine and District Cricket Association junior and senior seasons, and gave budding players the opportunity to try the sport before signing up to the competition, which begins in a fortnight.
NT Cricket game and market development manager Mitch Farnell hailed the afternoon as one of “fun activities for crickets of all abilities”, adding that it was a non-confrontational way for children to see if they enjoyed the sport.
“It’s an excellent way for boys and girls to gain a taste of cricket and learn some of the skills of cricket in an enjoyable environment,” he said.
Four teams - Cows, Bats, Crocs and Barras - will pad up for the senior KDCA season, with two junior teams also poised to take to the field.
KDCA president Melinda Sauer said the Play Cricket event had been a positive for the club, with about 30 children signing up to the MILO in2CRICKET and MILO T20 Blast programs.
“KDCA is amazed at the uptake of keen cricketers in Katherine,” she told the Katherine Times.
“We are looking forward to having a great season and making it a family day out.
In the lead-up to round one of competition on April 16, the association will host a Level 0 coaching course on April 16, with an umpiring and scoring course scheduled for April 17.
After a break-in during the Christmas period, Mrs Sauer said the club was desperate for new equipment.
“We’re looking for sponsors for equipment, as KDCA had most of our gear stolen over the Christmas break,” she explained.
