Played under outstanding conditions, local and visiting golfers alike enjoyed the spirited competition and, thanks to Frank Dalton and his staff, the unique Katherine Country Club hospitality over the two days of competition.
The 2015 event attracted record sponsorship, with a number of golfers sharing the generous bounty at a winner's’ presentation on June 14.
The efforts of Phil Witte and the ground staff, along with those of an active committee led by Sam O’Neil, were rewarded with a well-prepared and challenging course that was the envy of most visiting club golfers.
Thanks also for the efforts of starter Nathan Campfield and the behind-the-scenes presence of Belinda over the two days.
Humpty Doo golfer Ian Walker enjoyed the conditions best to take out the open championship.
Generous in his praise for the course conditions and layout, Walker played two days of consistent, quality golf that resulted in him adding his name to the perpetual trophy.
Young up-and-coming golfer Asha Hargreaves did Darwin Golf Club proud by taking out the 2015 ladies championship.
Going through the grades, the A-grade championship went to Walker, the B-grade was won by local Brett “Yowie” Hughes and Stuart Campbell bagged C-grade honours.
On June 21, things will get back to normal for Katherine golfers as they line up to compete in round three of the Drummond Golf Stableford Points Chase.
Tee off times are available on the website and visiting golfers are most welcome.
Members of the Katherine Veterans Golf Club were well represented in last weekend’s open, despite not claiming much of a share of the bounty.
This will result in a hunger for success in Saturday’s nine holes of classic veterans action.
“Stop Rabbit’s run” has become the theme and purpose for the wily old golfers, who will tee off at 10.30am on June 20.
