Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.
LEITH Waterbury has not been a part of the Katherine community for as long as some, but it has not taken much time for him to devote himself to giving back to the town, and implant himself as one of the true community heroes of Katherine.
Having moved from Darwin almost two years ago, where he worked teaching and mentoring boys through the Clontarf, a transfer to Katherine saw him immediately injecting his heart and soul into helping his students at Katherine High School’s own Clontarf Academy.
“He is heavily involved with the senior boys and their employment opportunities ... he’s passionate about the Clontarf Foundation,” friend and colleague at Clontarf, Matthew Hamdorf said.
“I’ve known him since he was up at Darwin, and he’s dedicated, hardworking, serious (mostly) and always involved in the community,” Mr Hamdorf said.
Having volunteered with the Katherine Fire Station since March last year, and now involved as an auxiliary member, Leith’s colleague, Station Officer Chris Manuel said he is a fantastic team player.
“He’s energetic, good fun and a good guy. You can go to any incident with him, and know you’re going to get a professional guy who will do the job ... He is just a good, genuine caring bloke,” Mr Manuel said.
“We don’t want to pump him up too much though, because we always have a bit of friendly banter, I don’t want him to believe I like him too much, it would ruin it.”
One thing those who know the 37-year-old best do agree on, is his devotion to his two daughters and two sons.
“He’s a fantastic dad to his kids, he’s heavily involved with them and their sport, and he coaches the under-16s Camels side as well,” Mr Hamdorf said.
“He’s very passionate about all youth, and he works hard for them – he’s just keen to see them
succeed.”
