Police will launch Sober Streets on Christmas Eve, a project which will reward drivers who are breathalysed during the next month and provide a blood alcohol reading of zero by giving them an opportunity to win one of four $500 accounts with the bank.
Katherine Acting Superintendent Meghan Funnell said the concept had been borrowed from Queensland, adding that it was the first time it had been attempted in the Northern Territory.
Police Minister Peter Chandler praised the initiative and said it provided a unique way to spread the drink driving message.
“There’s other ways we can work outside the square to do it,” he said.
“What they’re doing in Katherine is a perfect example of that.”
Drivers who blow zero will be able to submit entry tickets until the project ends on January 27.
