Bronwyn Chandler said the team had been axed because there were not enough women currently competing at a national level in the Territory.
She said that, while the revelation the NT would not be fielding a women’s line-up at the 2016 Australian Sides Championships was “shattering”, she was using the disappointment as a catalyst to attract more players of the fairer sex to the sport in Katherine.
“If we could eventually have four from Katherine [to make up one of the three four-women teams] it would be awesome,” she said.
“We need local players and are looking at ladies barefoot bowls to try and trigger more interest.”
Bowls NT did not respond to inquiries from the Katherine Times about the axing.
