Ms Cupples lost her sister Simone Mongomerie when she was tragically killed in race fall just days after being the first female to win the Darwin Premiership in August 2013.
This is when Ms Cupples first became aware of the Jockeys’ Trust despite family ties to the industry for many years.
“The Jockey’s Trust is an amazing organisation, people see jockeys winning, jockeys celebrating and jockeys riding; what people don’t see is behind the scenes,” she said.
“One broken collar bone could leave a jockey with not one single cent of income for three months, a fall could leave a jockey out for six months.
“A lot of the times jockeys become jockeys at the age of 15 and have no other skills to fall back on so one fall could have them out of a career by age 20, a lot of jockeys have been known to suffer depression, there’s been a lot of suicide, drug abuse and alcohol abuse because they don’t know what to do with their life after racing.
“So the National Jockey’s Trust are there to support all of that and that is one of the things the public don’t see is all of that behind the scenes.”
Ms Cupples said the National Jockey’s Trust is also there to support the family members of fallen jockeys.
Due to the cost of life insurance for a jockey, many jockeys earning $30,000 per year are not able to afford it despite the risk being the same for them as it is for a jockey earning $1,000,000 per year.
Katherine Turf Club put on a charity dinner and themed golf day to raise money for the Cycling for Simone group and between the two events raised just short of $5000.
“The support has been amazing,” Ms Cupples said.
“We’ve had nearly every race club along the way has been very supportive and given us a place to stay
Not just race clubs, other places as well caravan parks and roadhouses, everyone has been very welcoming and some days we are in shock of what people do for us.
