Police urged unlicensed gun owners to “come and see us before we visit you” in a Facebook post on Saturday.
The post was accompanied by a video that showed footage of firearms that had been handed in or seized being cut to pieces with a grinder. The video came as a renewed message for the NT Police’s Operation Autour.
Operation Autour is an NT Police initiative which aims to identify all expired firearm licence owners and make sure they are fulfilling their obligations under the Firearms Act.
Police said compliance checks would be conducted on safe storage requirements to ensure gun owners are fulfilling their responsibility and expired licence holders are not in possession of firearms.
“Our message is simple, if you want to be a gun owner then you need to make sure you are meeting the requirements. Come and see us before we visit you,” the post said.
