Newcastle artist Peter Gardiner was selected as winner of the $50,000 main prize by a panel of three judges on August 26, but there is a $5000 People’s Choice prize up for grabs based on popular votes cast online or at the gallery.
“We are delighted with the reach,” Newcastle Art Gallery manager Lauretta Morton said of the entries. There were more than 200 submissions, with finalists selected from every state.
The competition is non-acquisitive, meaning the artist keeps the artwork.
The 35 finalists are Liam Ambrose, Michael Bell, Nicola Bolton, Clare Brodie, Isobel Clement, Rachel Coad, Tony Costa, Anh Do, Sophie Dunlop, Katherine Edney, Esther Erlich, Robert Ewing, Dongwang Fan, Julie Fragar, Jumaadi, Peter Gardiner, Michael Lindeman, Steve Lopes, Robert Malherbe, Matt R Martin, Darren McDonald, Carolyn McKay, Edward Milan, Rachel Milne, Michael Muir, Sally O’Callaghan, Effie Pryer, Paul Ryan, Wendy Sharpe, Ben Smith, Pablo Tapia, Craig Waddell, Natasha Andrea Walsh, Heidi Yardley and Michael Zavros.
There are several distinguished artists among the finalists. Yardley was a finalist in the 2016 Archibald Prize. Gardiner, Malherbe and Yardley were all finalists in the 2016 Wynne Prize. Sharpe was a finalist in the 2016 Sulman Prize. Queensland artist Zavros, a multiple-finalist in the Archibald Prize, won the 2016 Mosman Art Prize.
Jack Noel Kilgour, who bequeathed the funds for the creation of the prize, was an Australian artist known for his academic approach to landscape and portrait painting. He died in 1987.
