A total of 61.2mm was officially recorded after thunderstorms burst over the Top End town after Sunday.
Only a further millimetre of rain is needed to beat the record from 30 years ago with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting even more storms for the rest of the week with the possibility of between 5-10mm each day right through until Friday.
The long-term average September rainfall for Katherine is 7.7mm.
The wettest September on record was in 1986 when 65.4mm was recorded.
While September has been wet, the rest of the year has been dry with the total for the year about 380mm against a long-term average of 733.2mm because of the failure of this year’s “wet” season.
