Setting herself an extreme challenge, Bridie travelled around Darwin, each day for a month and raising $27,000 for the Top End’s Livin foundation in the process. Determined to raise awareness and funds to support the one in four Australians who will suffer from mental illness during their lives, Bridie wants others to know that speaking up and out is not weak. A qualified life coach and personal trainer with a degree in exercise and sports science, Bridie inspires people to strive for healthy mind, body and spirit. She devotes countless volunteer hours to her community – helping people to lose weight and gain self-esteem, volunteering as a strapper for football clubs of all codes, and instructing fitness classes for children with autism. With a reputation as superwoman within her community, Bridie draws on an endless supply of energy to encourage others.
Tristan Duggie, 28 – Indigenous educator
A dedicated artist and Indigenous educator, Tristan Duggie devotes his life to bringing his community together, enhancing educational opportunities, sharing traditional customs and inspiring a love of his homelands in a new generation. A teacher’s aide at the Mungkarta Homelands Learning Centre, located 80 kilometres south of Tennant Creek, Tristan encourages young students – many of whom lead very challenging lives – to embrace culture and education, and gain strength from being Aboriginal. Tristan is involved in a diverse range of community projects which reflect his passion for human rights, caring for country and respecting elders, past and present. Tristan is always on hand to take the elderly into Tennant Creek for a shopping trip, or drive the local football team to a game. He and colleagues at the Mungkarta School developed the annual One Dream, One Ride project, recreating old stockmen traditions to connect generations and raise funds for the community. A quiet achiever, Tristan is admired for his selfless service to others.
Cj Fraser-Bell, 26 – Artist and performer
A strong contributor and driver in Darwin’s alternative arts scene for many years, Cj Fraser-Bell is an emerging arts maker and manager. With a passion for multi-artform collaborative performance, Cj has taken on a myriad of roles in the sector, many of them voluntary. At 26, her CV is impressive, and so is her passion for the arts. Currently, the Director of the Darwin Fringe Festival, Cj has been stage manager for Tracks Dance Company, Browns Mart and Corrugated Iron Youth Theatre, the program manager for the 2015 Fringe Festival and the associate producer of the LAUNCH Youth Festival. Cj moves confidently from performance to visual arts, and from writing to production. Recently, she’s shifted her focus to producing and performing in innovative new work and founded Darwin’s Theatre of the Found Collective – a co-operative that examines artistic practice through experimental theatre models.
Cj supports and empowers Darwin artists, and collaboratively creates new and exciting work.
Daniel Yore, 30 – Teacher
Originally trained as a doctor, Daniel Yore did stints in aged care, social work, research and global governance before becoming a high school teacher in an area of socioeconomic disadvantage. During his six years studying medicine at Monash University, Daniel developed a passion for public policy, and contributed to the body of knowledge on the Social Determinants of Health. He's been a delegate to a number of UN summits on health and sustainable development, chaired the Australian Medical Students' Association ThinkTank and convened a global health conference. But after turning his back on a potentially prestigious career in the medical profession, Daniel is now a teacher treasured by his students and is inspiring them to remain in school despite the challenges in their lives. Equally admired by his colleagues for his hard work and enthusiastic leadership, Daniel is determined to apply his rich, real-world experience to drive change in policy and practice, and to create a fairer, better world for all.
