Bureau of Meteorology records show 63.3mm fell yesterday, the highest 24 hour reading in a year and the highest January daily rainfall for three years.
Katherine has now received 223.8mm for the year so far, against 27mm at the same time last year.
The long term average for the month is 265.9mm.
We still have a long way to go to challenge the wettest January on record which was 732mm in the devastating flood year of 1998.
As expected, river heights are rising sharply at Nitmiluk and Katherine gauges but from a low level.
The deep low pressure system which brought the rain has moved west although the bureau is forecasting the likelihood of more rain in Katherine over the next week.
