Thunderstorms are the official forecast for Katherine and the Top End after a few days' relief from the wet season.

The mowers were roaring across Katherine yesterday as residents took advantage of a respite from the wet to tackle the quick growing grass in the sweaty heat.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the monsoonal trough has now returned to trigger more showers and storms across Katherine for the next week so it may be goodbye to the sun again.

The Katherine River fell a further two metres yesterday and is sitting just under 12 metres.
