Police said the young woman was walking to work early this morning when a man tried to grab her.
“The woman was walking down First Street at about 4am when a man dropped his pants and tried to grab at her shirt,” a police spokesman said.
“She managed to get away and contacted police.”
Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
The offender was described as an Indigenous male.
Two German tourists were also sexually assaulted at the Katherine Visitor Information Centre last week.
At this stage police were unable to comment on whether the two crimes were linked.
Police crime statistics released last week show sexual assaults have risen 72.7 per cent in the past year.
An average of three people are sexually assaulted in Katherine a month.
