TAKING THE CHAIR: Alderman Gazey moves his nameplate into position as he takes the chair at last night's council meeting.

Alderman Peter Gazey was last night elected deputy Mayor of Katherine Town Council.

Alderman Gazey chaired the first meeting of the newly elected council in the absence of holidaying Mayor Fay Miller.

Much of the meeting was taken up with the appointment of the aldermen to the various committees which council is involved with.

Many questions were asked at the pre-meeting forum on rate rises and the formula used to reach new valuations on properties.

The provision of a skip bin on Edith Farms Road was also discussed as was covered parking and the provision of solar panels on council buildings.

There was brief debate on the provision of a casting vote for the Mayor which council voted to approach with Alderman Jon Raynor voting against.

The council also heard from a Katherine business which has objected to the sale of tourist merchandise at the Katherine Visitor Information Centre in direct opposition their own trade.

The council was told the visitor centre generate more than $1 million worth of “tourism products” for the Katherine region to the benefit of Katherine businesses.
